UPDATE: Wednesday, 1/13/2021

It has been nearly 10 months since the start of our stay-at-home orders with no definitive end date. Even though it seems we wait endlessly, may we not forget to remain focused on our spiritual lives. This week, as we challenge ourselves on spiritual matters, let us develop an attitude of steadfastness and growth. Our prayer is to uplift us as God’s people to grow in our spiritual lives and continue to live by faith rather than falling back. While it’s been a long and arduous road, may this week’s focus remind and challenge us to keep pressing on in the Lord.

Over the past few weeks, we have experienced great tragedy and sorrow. Perhaps your family has experienced deep suffering due to a health crisis caused by the pandemic. Please know that our hearts and prayers are with you all as we experience painful loss. This week, may you be encouraged by God’s comforting words and know that even in loss, we can remember the work of those who are no longer with us. May their example of service move us to continue the work God has placed before us as we live for Him in this new year!

UPDATE: Wednesday, 12/30/2020

As the weeks turn into months, the global pandemic continues to drag on. Yet in these extremely difficult times, may we find strength and perseverance through prayer. This week, we look at two very simple prayers that had great impact. Even in the midst of a prolonged and uncomfortable situation, may we turn to prayer no matter how short or simple, knowing that we pray to a powerful and sovereign God. Let us dedicate ourselves especially to prayer as we enter a new year!

UPDATE: Wednesday, 12/16/2020

As we continue to wait upon God’s deliverance from this quarantine state, let us practice great patience. We look to God’s Word in the book of James for practical guidance on this important characteristic. May we see this opportunity to wait on the Lord as a blessing as we seek God’s timing not only in this season of pandemic, but more so, for Christ’s return. I pray that we eagerly await His coming again with great endurance!

UPDATE: Wednesday, 12/9/2020

Have you taken a moment to consider the blessing we often receive at the end of our Sunday services? This week, we break down the importance of the benediction prayer that can be easily overlooked when it is given to us. Important truths are given in this simple, short prayer that reminds us of God’s abundant work even in the midst of trials. As we humbly listen, may this prayer have significant impact not only for this devotional, but every time we hear a benediction prayed over us. May you be blessed this week!

UPDATE: Wednesday, 11/25/2020

This week, we look at the sincere prayer of the tax collector as described by Jesus in the book of Luke. Here, we see the posture of prayer and honesty in which he speaks so boldly before God, and yet with great humility. As we listen to this devotional, may we find comfort in our Lord who hears every word we pray, takes notice of the way we approach Him, and even sees our inmost hearts. Let us be challenged to pray sincerely to a God who faithfully provides and knows our every need especially in this difficult season.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 11/18/2020

Jeremiah 33:2-3 says, ‘The Lord who made the earth, the Lord who forms it to establish it, the Lord is his name, says this: Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and incomprehensible things you do not know.’ We have such direct access to a great and mighty God! Let us not forget this powerful and foundational promise even though our circumstances are difficult, and things don’t seem to have an end. Continue to call on God directly. He is in control. He is the One who established and formed this earth. Let us continue to rely on His completely perfect sovereignty.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 11/4/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Whether in hardship or blessing, suffering or favor, anxiousness or peace, let us remember that God has His promised plans for our lives. In the midst of this enduring season, we look to the Lord as the one who constantly guides our paths, has an everlasting promise, and continues to lead us with His mighty hand. It may not look like the plans we have, but God will ultimately lead us through this hardship and into His great glory. And even though we don’t know the length of time for Him to accomplish this, our hope is to put our trust in Him each day to fulfill His perfect plans through us. May the Lord indeed help us.

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
As we continue our focus on the upcoming elections, remember to pray for our country. This week, we focus on three important truths from God’s Word as we practice our responsibility to vote. May these points help us not only to make the proper choices during this upcoming election, but also to pray these truths over our future leaders and political decisions. Remain steadfast in prayer for our government no matter what the outcome and rely on the sovereignty of our Almighty God.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 10/14/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Colossians 3:2-3 reminds us to “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” As we look around at our earthly circumstances, they can easily distract us from seeing the things above. As you listen to this week’s devotional, make a commitment to focus on life with a greater eternal perspective. What earthly distractions have hindered your heavenly focus? Acknowledge and submit these things before God this week.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 10/7/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
As we take time to pray for our youth this week, think about someone you may personally know in this age group. Pray that God would meet them in this difficult time as they navigate academics, social relationships, and seek spiritual community. The Bible prompts us to pray on behalf of this group to experience joy and to take action today in light of eternity. Pray that their daily decisions would be made with wisdom rooted in Biblical foundations. Let us seek God’s divine work so that our youth would pursue eternal joy rather than temporary entertainment.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 9/30/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
The natural disasters that our country is experiencing can remind us of God’s judgment upon His people. The Bible often uses extreme natural occurrences to grab the attention of those experiencing them. But alongside these events, God often shows His mercy despite great destruction. As we continue to endure and persevere through earthquakes, fires, and the pandemic, may we also cling to the new mercies that the Lord has for us each day. As difficult as it may be, let us give God our full attention and seek His will for us through this prolonged season.

This week, will you join us in praying earnestly for the elderly in our church? Take a moment to consider someone in your life who is older in age and perhaps struggling in this current season. As we engage with God’s Word, His truth reminds us to pray specifically for this age group’s usefulness and effectiveness. No matter the difficulties, we hope and pray that our elderly will continue to persevere physically and mentally but especially, they will excel in displaying God’s glory to others in the best way possible.

Please go online to register (free of charge) at https://watch.cmcglobal-afc.org/. Join the rest of us to grow together.

Don’t forget to join us for ESPM (English-Speaking Prayer Meeting) on Zoom video-conferencing TODAY, 8:00-9:00 pm. During this time of pandemic, the church needs to come together to pray, even through online means. The language and prayer topics will adjust the last half hour for youth and up. You can find out how to join us at fcbc.la/pray.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 9/2/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
We are getting close to our sixth month of quarantine and if you’re anything like me, there have been many times of impatience, annoyance, and even anger. As we study a familiar passage this week, may we be reminded that both you and I are in need of personal reflection and examination. Even though circumstances, events, and perhaps other people may have caused us to feel irritated, Jesus reminds us in Matthew to look inwardly first and foremost. We pray for humility this week to see our own faults and weaknesses before pointing out faults and weaknesses in others.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 8/26/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Praise God that we have access to talk to and hear from Him through the power of prayer. As we reflect on Psalm 72 this week, take notice of the way David prayed and passed on this important prayer to his son Solomon. David’s example of prayer focused on the goodness of God in a way that was memorable to the next generation. As we pray to the Lord, especially in this critical season, let’s remain focused on God’s great character that is unchanging even though our circumstances continue to be unpredictable.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 8/19/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Even though this season may be difficult, we hope and pray that we can still put our trust in God. As David writes in Psalm 56, “When I am afraid, I will trust in [God].” Through difficult times, David remembered and looked to the Lord as his trust in Him remained strong. David even took his trust one step further by praising God in the midst of turmoil and oppression. May this short devotional remind us to put our faith and hope in a God who is worthy to be praised. Take a moment to read and reflect on this entire psalm this week.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 8/12/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
As we continue to wait on the Lord in this season, we must ask ourselves, “What is God saying to us? How is God getting our attention?” This week’s devotional from Psalm 50 reminds us that our great and mighty God is speaking directly to us. As His people, we need to pay attention, listen, and act on what He says. We also need to pray that we maintain a posture of continued waiting and listening for God’s direction, no matter how long it takes.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 8/5/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR

The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed;
you will heal him on the bed where he lies. (Psalm 41:3)

As the pandemic continues, we hear stories of more and more people falling into helpless situations. They have nowhere to turn. What should we, as God’s people, do? As you listen to this week’s devotional from Psalm 41, find out what the Lord will do for those who are “considerate of the poor”. Be encouraged to help the helpless.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 7/29/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR

You are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble.
You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance. Selah (Psalm 32:7)

This chapter in the Psalms describes those who come to the Lord in times of trial and tribulation. The writer realizes the promises of God’s presence, forgiveness, and comfort. Even in the midst of turmoil, whether external or internal, we are reminded that we can go to God in a ‘hiding place’ that is both physical and spiritual. In this place, we can be open and honest before God and find great joy by being with Him. As you watch the video linked below, please also take some time this week to read and meditate on the whole chapter of Psalm 32. May it bring you joy in these difficult times.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 7/22/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
As the news in our country tells us that the pandemic is far from over, we still want to be reminded of God’s unending faithfulness to His people. Even though reopening may seem further and further away, let us stay faithful to a God who has always remained present with us each and every day. This week, let us be reminded that we place our trust in the promise of God to remain faithful even when we are faithless (2 Timothy 2:13) and as we recall the words from an age-old hymn:

“Great is Thy faithfulness, ” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”

UPDATE: Wednesday, 7/15/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us that God’s “ways are not our ways” and His “thoughts are not our thoughts.” As we receive news that indoor gatherings and businesses are being shut down again, we may be left wondering what is happening and what the future holds. Our devotional this week reminds us that even though we may feel rejected, dejected, and confused, God’s ways are higher and greater than our own. We may not understand exactly why God is allowing this pandemic to continue, but let us hold to the promise that God has a bigger plan for all of us in this. May we remain focused on Him throughout this difficult and confusing time.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 7/8/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
As some of us may be returning to our places of work soon, may we be reminded of our faithful witness to our coworkers. Our passage this week gives us great insight on practical ways to show others the work of Christ even while being back in the office. Perhaps there are opportunities in our everyday conversations to share about our Savior even while we work virtually. Whether we’re changing our physical location for work, remaining at home, or even walking around the neighborhood, let us be encouraging, loving, and prayerful. God may be giving us the perfect opportunity to share about Him in even the smallest conversations.

Evangelistic Opportunity This Sunday
This Sunday’s sermon on July 12th will include a gospel presentation and invitation. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to ask unsaved family members or roommates to view the sermon video with you or to invite friends, co-workers, classmates, etc. to view it on their own. The gospel is the power of salvation. It doesn’t matter what form it is delivered. Please pray with us that God will move people to turn to Christ and receive eternal life.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 7/1/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
This week, we are praying that the church would experience wisdom and discernment for the ‘hollow and deceptive philosophy’ in these days (Colossians 2:8). May we guard ourselves against the lies and schemes of the Evil One so that our focus and foundation would be found in the truth of God and His Word for us. It is too easy to get lost in the news, statistics, and opinions all around us. Let us pray for great counsel from the Holy Spirit as we root ourselves in the hope of Christ rather than the wrong messages of this world.

Reopening Update

UPDATE: Wednesday, 6/24/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Does the Lord take pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord?

“Look: to obey is better than sacrifice, to pay attention is better than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:22

As we consider how the church will return in the near future, we often discuss what worship service will look like in the ‘new normal.’ It has been so easy to get carried away with all the different voices, opinions, and statistics that affect our return. Our devotional this week reminds us of the essential focus of obedience in the midst of all the decisions and details that need to be met in order to meet again. While there is still much to discuss, would you join us to pray that we not lose sight of the importance of obeying the Lord our God first and foremost?

UPDATE: Wednesday, 6/17/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
As we enter into the summer months, we can’t help but think about the upcoming new church year that’s right around the corner. Along with the new church year, there will be new opportunities, new ways to do ministry, and new ways to serve. We can’t wait for you to join us in any capacity to continue to bring life to the church whether we meet in person or continue to be at home. But before we think about service opportunities, let us not lose sight of this season to ‘follow’ wholeheartedly. As we continue to seek God in ways to serve, we must not forget what He may be asking of us now: to know Him and spend time with Him. Let us look to the Lord not just for direction and guidance for future ministry opportunities, but to simply sit at His feet, building our relationship with Him.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 6/10/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1
As we look into Psalm 91 this week, we praise our God for His protection and sovereignty over the past few months. In a world that seems as chaotic as ever, our hope is to surrender ourselves to the presence of God. May we seek His counsel and guidance because He is a God who is faithful and true. It is our prayer that we can find satisfaction in God’s timing for His righteousness and ultimate deliverance. Please take a moment to read and meditate on this great chapter of Scripture throughout the week.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 6/3/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Over the past few days, we have witnessed in our country deep wounds that have brought forth great pain and sorrow expressed in many different ways. We may not know what to say or do in these matters, but may we be reminded of the grace and mercy God has given us through Jesus Christ. This week, take the time to confess your own personal struggles and sins, but also, confess the blatant sins of our world that have filled our screens over the past few days. Take a moment to seek God’s forgiveness on behalf of your own life, the sinful patterns of our nation, and the prevalence of sin worldwide. Confess these sins because He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

UPDATE: Sunday, 5/31/2020

Dear brothers, sisters, and regular attenders of FCBCLA,

On behalf of the pastoral staff, we pray that you and your family are doing well in the Lord!

It has been more than two months since the “Safer at Home” public orders were issued. Recently, local public health officials provided guidance on how to safely reopen our church campus for in-person worship services and gatherings. The pastoral staff along with our Reopening Task Force have been working on plans to reopen, but it will take time due to the size and complexity of our ministries and the numerous limitations in the LA County guidance.

Although we do not plan to reopen our church campus immediately, it will be weeks (not months) before we regather in person. For now, we are preparing our facilities and transitioning our worship services to live-streaming to allow for those who remain home to join us in worshipping God.

The burden and priority of pastoral staff is to uphold our love for God, our neighbors, and our witness to our community. Along with that, the wellbeing of brothers and sisters and visitors to our church is a high priority. We believe that as shepherds of God’s flock, we have the responsibility to make wise and sound decisions as we follow our Chief Shepherd Jesus Christ. Our decisions will be made biblically, legally, and responsibly.

Please pray for the pastoral staff and Reopening Task Force as we plan. We will keep you informed as plans progress. We look forward to the day when we can meet together again face to face as the body of Christ.

Until then, grace and peace to you and your family!

FCBCLA Pastoral Staff

UPDATE: Wednesday, 5/27/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
As our church looks to planning our return to ministry, we try to look ahead with faith while also being mindful and careful. Although we may not know what church may look like in the future, we continue to hold to the everlasting promise of God’s sovereignty and faithfulness each day. God may be guiding us to a place where we cannot see all the details yet, so may we hold on to His presence with us daily. Let us seek His direction and leading through prayer and the reading of His Word. I pray we are a people who continue to live in patience and perseverance for God’s timing that leads us to our God-given destination.

Don’t forget to join us for ESPM (English-Speaking Prayer Meeting) on Zoom video-conferencing TODAY, 8:00-9:00 pm. During this time of pandemic, the church needs to come together to pray, even through online means. The first 30-minutes (up to 8:30) can involve children as the language will be simpler and the subject matter more sensitive to younger ones. The language and prayer topics will adjust the last half hour for youth and up. You can find out how to join us at fcbc.la/pray.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 5/20/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Over the past few months now, we hope as a church to continue to lean on the power of prayer. May this week’s devotional serve as a reminder to come before our Lord with a humble and honest heart asking for His guidance and direction. Let us not just ask with general requests, but let us be specific with our desires before Him. God promises to hear and answer us, so may we be willing to ask, seek, and knock with open hearts willing to be transformed.

“Safer at Home” Update and Reopening Survey: The pastoral staff along with our COVID-19 task force have been praying and planning for our return. The main priorities are the health and well-being of our church family and our witness to our community as we begin to reopen the church campus for worship services and gatherings. For now, the “Safer at Home” orders have been extended with gradual modifications for reopening throughout LA County. We will continue to comply accordingly and prepare our church campus for our return. UPDATE: Wednesday, 5/13/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Our hearts as church leaders have been and always will be as people ready and available for spiritual change and transformation. Sometimes, God calls for this change through difficult circumstances. The Bible refers to this as being “refined” in fire as with precious metals or jewels. Our hope is that we are purified and made more whole especially during this difficult and trying season. As we continue to walk through this refinement with Him, may we be aware of how God is transforming us to be more like Jesus and to live out His righteousness and goodness.

We have no new announcements at this time, but please check our Sunday announcements for further updates.

This week, we take a moment to recognize the power of prayer especially during this season. God has given us a great opportunity to communicate and talk to Him at any moment through prayer. We hope that you go to God throughout the day for His will to be done and for His peace to guard us in these difficult times. Let us not forget this powerful weapon to approach God more often because He hears us and brings great comfort in our time of need.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 4/22/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
God’s Word is uplifting and encouraging! This week, as we hear from the Word, consider your own words that can bring hope and life in these trying times. May His Word change, challenge, and move us to speak to others and point to Him.

Summer Ministries
Due to the impact of COVID-19 in California and our commitment to ensure the safety of our brothers and sisters, the Senior Pastoral Team has decided that all programs and activities that require a large group setting and extensive planning will be cancelled through August.

This includes children and youth camps, mission trips such as HSMT, summer enrichment programs for adults and children, etc. Also, as previously announced, our church office and campus will remain closed for church business and ministries until further notice. Should you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Pastor Benny, Pastor Abraham, or Pastor Chris.

Our pastoral staff recognizes that our summer ministries have historically played a significant part in discipleship and evangelism. We have always looked forward to God’s amazing work during these important months and are thankful for your past involvement in making summer ministries possible through the years.

Given the current situation, this summer at church will look very different but we believe that by God’s grace we can still make a significant impact for God’s Kingdom. Please pray with us and work with us as we look forward to finding new ways of doing God’s work during these unprecedented times.

Communion
We will resume our monthly communion beginning May 3rd. The Cantonese congregation will have communion on the first Sunday of the month. The Mandarin and English congregations will have communion on the fourth Sunday of the month.

We will conduct all three communions live via Zoom meetings at these times:
Cantonese – 10:15 am (Sunday, May 3)
English – 12:15 pm (Sunday, May 24)
Mandarin – 10:30 am (Sunday, May 24)

Communion elements
Please prepare your own communion elements.
If you cannot prepare your own communion elements, you may pick up the elements from one of the seven distribution stations (same stations as for face masks distribution).
For the elderly who want to use our elements but are unable to leave their home, our Chinese-speaking pastoral staff will deliver communion elements to them.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 4/15/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Deuteronomy 31:8 tells us a great promise of God’s strength and presence, “The Lord is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.” As we seek God’s Word together this week, we pray that He continues to lead us not only for each moment and hour, but even more so for our future. However long we are to stay at home, let us not be afraid because simply put, God is with us.

“Safer At Home” Update
As you may be well aware, the “Safer At Home” order has been extended to May 15th by our local government. We continue to submit to our governing authorities, pray for God’s divine intervention, and serve where we can in this crisis. As such, we will continue to provide shepherding, along with the ministry of the Word and prayer in the current online format. May we continue to trust and hope in our Lord Jesus Christ and wait upon Him!

UPDATE: Wednesday, 4/8/2020

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Greetings! As we remember the Lord Jesus this Passion Week, let us be reminded more than ever of our need for a Savior. Jesus modeled for us what humility and obedience looked like in the face of uncertainty and even certain death. May we adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus as we face each day! I call all of us to set aside time this week to remember our Lord Jesus through daily devotions, prayer, and special services. As the church, we want to emphasize, together, our focus on Jesus in the midst of our lives at home. May His amazing grace fill us to experience God’s unchanging love for those around us.

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Isaiah 41:10 says, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God…”

The Word of God is powerful and mighty! It contains great promises that go beyond our circumstances, situations, and disasters. I want to remind us all of this message about our great God–especially in this time of fear. This short passage in Isaiah teaches us who God will always be despite our feelings of anxiety and isolation.

Thursday, 3/12/2020

Dear FCBCLA Brothers and Sisters and Regular Attenders,

As you may be aware of the rapidly changing situation with COVID-19, the state and county public health officials have advised large gatherings to be limited at this time. This afternoon, our Response Team was part of a teleconference call with the LA County Public Health for faith-based organizations that strongly emphasized the need to comply. Therefore, the Pastoral Staff and our Response Team, after prayerfully seeking the Lord’s will and direction, have decided to suspend all worship services and church activities on the church campus effective March 13, 2020. This will be in effect until March 31, 2020, unless further extended. We will closely monitor the situation and keep our church family informed.

In this season, we hope to emphasize that we are taking these actions out of love for our neighbors and each other. We pray that God would have mercy on all who are affected, those who are vulnerable, and our frontline responders. We would also like to encourage you to reach out to one another and to consider how we may love our neighbors. May we extend the love and peace of Christ to those around us. Above all, let us pray earnestly for God to deliver us and glorify the name of Jesus Christ!

We would like for our church family to take the following steps:

  1. Stay updated through our FCBCLA website, app and Facebook page. https://fcbc.org
  2. All smaller gatherings of less than 20 people may continue to meet away from the church campus but are encouraged to be modified to reduce exposure and spread of the illness. There is still a need for fellowship and care for each other during this season. Be creative in reaching out to each other and gathering together. If you are well enough and low-risk (to your family and others), please consider meeting together in small groups in homes. If this is a concern, please reach out to our pastors for suggestions. You can conduct meetings via online platforms, virtual bible studies, family worship times, home prayer meetings, and gather together to view our weekly videos that will be released for your use to worship God.
  3. Weekly videos and content will be released for your use to worship God. We will do our best to serve the ministry of the Word and prayer to our church family.
  4. The church office will remain open with modified hours. Please call before you visit. The pastors remain available to serve you and pray for you in any way. These are stressful times, so please do not hesitate to contact us.
  5. Lastly, if you or a family member, has been found positive, presumptive positive, or may have come in contact with someone with COVID-19, please inform your fellowship/small group leader or pastor immediately.

We understand that these may be fearful times, but may it strengthen our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and deepen our love for one another and those around us. Always remember, these may be uncertain times, but we serve an unchanging God.
