3on3 For Chinatown is an annual basketball tournament that started in 2010. The one-day fundraising event supports local organizations dedicated to serving the Chinatown community. Each year, a group is selected to receive the thousands of dollars raised through the tournament. This platform is also used to educate participants on the services that the featured organization provides for the community as well as raise awareness for its needs. With three competitive divisions and a three-point shooting contest, the tournament is organized so that players of all skill levels can participate. The event has seen steady growth since its inception with dozens of volunteers and hundreds of participants now involved each year.
This year, 3on3 For Chinatown proceeds will benefit Castelar Elementary School’s Education Through Music (ETM) program, which utilizes the creative influence of music to cultivate well-rounded, enriched growth in children. Castelar is the second oldest school in the district and serves over 600 students. The neighborhood surrounding the school is comprised primarily of lower middle class immigrant families and the working poor. Children of these families rarely have opportunities to experience private music education. ETM enriches students beyond the instrumental and vocal music instruction. The program’s curriculum encourages better speaking and listening abilities, higher self-esteem, confidence, creativity, and increased spatial reasoning used for math, science, and engineering.
